BAA Finals Weekend

We got back yesterday from Melton Mowbray and our first visit to the BAA Finals. It was a very up-and-down weekend but we had a great time.

Kim is officially the BAA Introductory Medium Dog of the Year 2006/07 – she has been leading since last October and her only real challenger this summer was Moss (with Anne Holt), who I think would have caught her in a couple more shows!

Saturday was the Agility Finals day. The BAA have an interesting way of qualifying people for the Finals which I think works really well, as the top 10 in the Agility League table go through, and then a further 10 dogs can qualify on the day from the mornings Agility Qualifier (and the same for the jumping). Because Kim and I were top of both the agility and jumping leagues, we qualified automatically for both finals.

Intro Agility Final 2007

The jumping class in the morning was a really interesting course, and we did the difficult bits and then messed up on a pull-through (my bad handling!). In the Agility Qualifier later I planned to train it since we’d already qualified, and just get her running the dogwalk a bit quicker, but we had a cracking run and came 2nd! Once all the morning classes had closed, the Agility Finals were held – Intro first – and it was a really tough course. We started off well but it seems Kim came off the see-saw badly and landed on the same shoulder that she injured last week. I didn’t realise and continued on, and we managed to go clear but it was (painfully) slow after that, so we only finished 10th. I’m positive we could have done better but all credit to the amazing winners Shaun and Ribena, who went in first and did a perfect run that no-one else could touch. Kim was fine afterward by the way, and perfectly sound, but it seems to have jarred when she ran.

Sunday we had the Jumping Finals, and Kim and I messed up the Jumping qualifier to get E’d again (oops!) but then went and won the Agility class so I can’t be too annoyed! The Jumping Finals course was lovely but Kim and I were E’d as Kim was going faster than I expected, but she ran beautifully and I was really pleased. It was nice to see that the winner wasn’t a collie either, but a lovely black crossbreed.

Monday was the CleverDogs finals, so I only entered Kim in Snakes and Ladders in the morning. We usually manage to go clear but don’t do very well, so I was very surprised and pleased to find out we came 2nd!

In CleverDogs, Kim was in the Blue Lane, and was the first leg on in the Multimix division. We lost the first leg, won the second, and then lost the third, something that I was really pissed off about at the time. The dog we were against, Willow, did an excellent run and I had no problems with her winning (she actually went on to win the division). My problem was that she and Kim hit the flyball at the same time, but Kim was unable to trigger the box so lost the leg. Since I know Kim always has a great turn off the box and never has any problems, I complained and was told that the ball sometimes stuck in the box if it wasn’t loaded properly. Since my mum (who was kindly boxloading for me!) boxloads in flyball competitions for our teams at Owlers, I know she is perfectly capable of loading a box correctly, but apparently this box loads differently which we weren’t told before we ran. In the end I was told I should have brought my own box if I was so bothered, which I certainly would have done, but didn’t think much of the attitude — at least because I did kick up a fuss, subsequent boxloaders were taught how to do work that particular box properly. Generally I wasn’t very impressed with the whole thing and probably won’t bother entering again, but congrats to Shaun and Carly who came fourth in the Open Division 2, and to Gemma and the gorgeous Grace, who won it.

Finally, a couple of shout-outs: Huge congratulations to Helen and Lucy who won the Introductory Maxi Dog of the Year (we both did rubbish in the Finals, didn’t we!?) and to Laura and the gorgeous Merlin for winning the Discbusters Toss n Fetch and for your first agility win at Dogs on Top.

BFA Flyball Summer Championships

Kim and Mollie were competing in the BFA Summer Championships this weekend, and their team, Barking Owlers, won Division 8 with a time of 19.82! Due to the seeding we ended up racing against the teams we usually see at tournaments rather than those from further afield, but we had some great racing anyway against Sheffield, Live Wires, our friends at Dog Friendly, and in our last race against Northern Bytes. All the dogs ran their socks off, so well done to Jet, Meg, Buffy, Kim, Mollie and our brilliant height dog Jess.

I was a bit worried about Kim being lame but she was sound as a bell for the majority of the day, I did think she’d done it again on the last race of the day (over 13″ jumps) but she was absolutely fine, and wasn’t stiff the day after or anything. Very pleased, especially since it’s the BAA Finals next weekend!

Barney Owlers were seeded first in Division 2 and had a cracking day, just losing out to Doncaster on the final race to leave them 2nd with a fastest time of 18.15, great stuff guys!

I have to confess that I was expecting it to be something really different, but it was all generally a bit of a disappointment. It was a well-run tournament, and it had everything a normal tournament has, but there was nothing to mark it as a special event. I know we were only in Division 8, but I was really excited about attending and it was something of a let-down when we first arrived. Having said that, I’d go back again next year if we qualified!

Website Changes: You may also notice that undermybed.co.uk has a new layout! The ever-popular Sad Puppy guarded the website for a day or so whilst I implemented all the changes. I was going for something a bit different with this one, and I’ve been wanting to do something with brighter colours for a while now. Feedback much appreciated!

Dylan’s Blog – Flyball

Dylan had another great flyballing session last night!

Click here to download a very short clip of Dylan learning to Flyball. This is only his third flyballing session so I’m really pleased with him. He’s running back as fast as he’s running up, and that’s without any momentum coming off the box (as we aren’t using it yet).

We put most of the netting up because we had both lanes up and wanted to see if Dylan and Chip would run whilst other dogs were working. This was the bit I was most worried about, I have to admit! But they both did really well. Dylan was running against a dog called Josh who ran out and chased him down, but my boy ran back up the lane again when I asked him to so no harm done, apparently!

We’re going to start doing boxwork with them both from now on. I can’t wait!

Flyball

Kim injured herself earlier this week and went lame, with just 5 days to go until the Flyball Summer Championships. Luckily it wasn’t serious, just a strain in her shoulder, and she’s been on lead-walks and rest since it happened. Unfortunately it did mean she had to miss training last night, (which didn’t go down well!) but she’s raring to go this morning with no sign of a limp at all, so I’m sure she’ll be fine for the weekend.

I’m really excited, we’ve never had the opportunity to qualify before and our team have drawn really well as Seed 2 in Division 8. We were seeded with 20.11 and have since run under 20seconds since, and our team is really running well at the moment. We’ve had our share of bad luck — one of the dogs on the team, Meg, had stitches removed on Monday, and Kim has been injured (see above!) — but it’s all coming together. I will definitely try and get some videos of the team. I wish I was staying on Sunday to see our top team in Division 2 (and hopefully breaking that 18seconds!) but we have a kitchen to build. Sometimes an oven and hot food is more important than flyball, unfortunately!

Dylan has also been learning to flyball again this week, and we managed to video a few of his “runs”. Go and have a look!

Agility Eye

agility eye cover

To the readers of the agility magazine “Agility Eye” (http://www.agilityeye.co.uk), you may be interested to note that this month’s issue features a cover designed and made by yours truly. For those of you who don’t subscribe, the original version is there on the left. Sadly it doesn’t feature any of my own dogs because at the time it was made I didn’t have a camera suitable for taking any agility photos, but I am thrilled that Chris and the rest of the staff used my design.

Kim had a fab day yesterday, she met up with one her oldest doggy pals Sam. Kim and Sam have been friends since Kim was a tiny wee pup, but they haven’t seen each other for 3 or 4 years, so it was a real reunion; they had their own little sleepover downstairs! We also took them for a lovely walk around Digley Reservoir. Digley is a really nice spot, I haven’t had the chance to go for ages and it was perfect weather yesterday. Unfortunately it does mean that the collies are feeling a bit neglected so I’ll take them out on our normal walk this afternoon, when it’s a bit cooler. I can’t believe how hot it is today!

Website Changes: Refreshed the qbee page, and the photography pages.
